Harry Maguire gets warm Man Utd reception after World Cup return despite being benched

Manchester United supporters gave Harry Maguire an extremely warm reception when he came on as a second half substitute during the Red Devils’ 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

A big cheer went up around Old Trafford as Harry Maguire entered the fray during Manchester United’s clash with Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night – something the defender won’t have experience for an awfully long time.

Having started on the bench, Maguire was brought on for the final 15 minutes of the game with United 2-0 up, and the fans gave him the kind of warm reception that would’ve seemed impossible a few weeks ago.

The 29-year-old has had a turbulent last couple of seasons, and after getting dropped by Erik ten Hag at the start of the current campaign his future at United looked all but over.

But his solid performances for England at the World Cup appear to have partway mended his fractured reputation with the United supporters, who were, for the first time in ages, happy to see him.

Maguire started every single one of the Three Lions’ matches out in Qatar, with England boss Gareth Southgate undeterred by his poor performances at club level over the past 18 months.

His faith in the former Leicester City man paid off as Maguire was one of England’s most reliable performers at the tournament.

United took the lead against Nottingham Forest after just 19 minutes after Marcus Rashford lashed home from a well-worked corner.

Anthony Martial doubled United’s lead three minutes later, though Forest keeper Wayne Hennessey – who was making his Premier League debut for the club – won’t want to see the replay the back.

Fred completed the rout on 87 minutes by stroking the ball into the far corner after being played through by compatriot Casemiro.
