Marwari horses are a unique and rare breed, famous for their curved ears that often touch at the tips. Originally from India, these magnificent horses are one of the oldest breeds, dating back to at least the 12th century.

On average, a Marwari horse in India will cost between 5-8 lakhs or more (approximately $5,000-$10,000 and up). Marwari horses are rare outside India and there are only a handful in America. It is highly unlikely you will be able to find a Marwari horse for sale in the United States and if you do they will likely cost somewhere in the five figures or more.

For decades, India banned Marwari horses from being exported. From 2000-2006, a small number of horses were allowed to be exported. In 2008, the Indian government allowed Marwari horses to be “temporary exports” for up to one year to be exhibited in other countries.

Marwari horses were first imported to America by British horsewoman Francesca Kelly in 2000. After five years of hard work, Kelly was able to import eight Marwaris to Massachusetts to help preserve this special breed.

Currently, there are only around 1,000 purebred Marwari horses in India. Outside of India, the breed is extremely rare, with an estimate of only 30 of these unique horses found in other countries.

Factors That Affect the Cost of a Marwari Horse

When finding out how much a Marwari horse will cost, these are some of the main factors that will determine the price:

Bloodlines

Like any breed of horse, bloodlines play an important role in the cost of a Marwari. These stunning horses have been bred for hundreds of years.

Marwari horses with pure bloodlines will sell for significantly higher prices. Some Marwaris have been crossbred with Thoroughbreds to create a more versatile horse. However, many people will pay top dollar for a purebred Marwari.

Training

When it comes to the cost of a Marwari, training will play a large role.  Training a horse takes time and dedication, so horses that are broke to ride will cost more than those that aren’t.

Marwaris can make great riding horses. They are a gaited breed known for their smooth, four-beat ambling gait called the revaal or rehwal. A horse that is fully trained and kept in regular conditioning will cost more than a horse with no training.

Show Record

Though their numbers may be low, India has shows specifically for the Marwari horse. They are athletic horses with excellent stamina.

Marwaris are used for polo, dressage, endurance, in-hand, and show jumping. Quality show horses can go for top dollar, around the equivalent of $15,000-$25,000 or more. Their beautiful conformation makes them a sight to behold in the show ring.

Where you live will play a huge factor in the price of a Marwari. In India, Marwari horses will regularly pop-up for sale.

However, the rest of the world will have a much harder time finding Marwaris for sale, which will drive up the cost. Outside of India, a small number of Marwaris can also be found in Pakistan, America, Oman, and Spain. If you are lucky, you may find one of them for sale in these countries.

Age and Conformation

Marwari horses have elegant, sleek builds with refined heads and signature curled ears at the tips. They have long legs and sturdy builds, allowing them to thrive in tough desert environments.

In addition to conformation, age will affect how much they cost. The prime age of a Marwari is around 5-16 years old. Horses in this age group will be fit for riding and driving. Once a horse is in its late teens or early 20s, they will often sell for much less.

Monthly Costs of Owning a Horse

If you are fortunate enough to find a Marwari for sale, you will need to take into consideration the monthly expenses before buying one. Boarding often costs between $150-$1,000 a month, depending on location and if your horse lives in a stall or pasture.

Board generally covers the expense of food, bedding, and basic care. Your horse will need its hooves done by a farrier every 6-8 weeks, which often costs between $45 – $150. For annual veterinary costs, you can expect to pay between $200-$400. In addition, dental care costs around $80-$250 every six months to a year.

Other Options Besides Buying

Buying a horse isn’t an option for every person, but fortunately, there are other options available. Leasing and joint ownership are two popular alternatives to buying your own horse.

Though the chances may be slim, some owners may offer their Marwari up for lease. This gives you the ability to have partial or full use of a horse at a more affordable price. In some situations, a limited liability company (LLC) or partnership may be an option, which will divide up the costs of buying and owning a Marwari.

Owning a Marwari Horse

If you live outside of India, the chances of finding a Marwari horse for sale is extremely unlikely. However, if you ever find one for sale they make great horses to own for experienced equestrians. This rare breed has a distinct look and a long, rich history.
