Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he knew Anthony Martial was going to end his barren run for Manchester United against Wolves due to a bizarre new tradition of getting his hair cut by the club’s in-house barber

Anthony Martial was on hand to open the scoring in Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Wolves at Old Trafford but one if his teammates already knew that he was going to be on the scoresheet.

Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he knew Anthony Martial was going to end his barren run for Manchester United against Wolves – because of a fresh trim.

The Frenchman has endured a frustrating season for the Red Devils this term. Injuries have limited him to just 13 starts in all competitions throughout the campaign and just seven goals before Saturday’s clash with Wolves.

Only one of those had come in the Premier League in 2023. Fernandes was confident that he would find the net against Wolves due to a bizarre new tradition of getting his hair cut by the club’s in-house barber.

Speaking after the full-time whistle, he said: “I knew he was going to score today because he had his haircut with our barber. Every time he gets his haircut with him, he gets his goal.

“So, I will call him [the barber] every time now to go the day before the game to cut his hair because we need this Anthony. We need the Anthony that scores goals, that gives us a lot of quality on the ball and creates a lot of space for others.

“So, I’m really pleased for his goal and also for seeing [Alejandro] Garnacho getting back to the games and getting his goal too.”

Anthony Martial celebrates his opener against Wolves

Martial’s goal certainly helped the Red Devils back to winning ways after back-to-back defeats at the hands of Brighton and West Ham. The victory has left them in fourth place and four points clear of their nearest challengers Liverpool.

Fernandes was full of praise for his teammates and the way they went about their business against Wolves at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese playmaker added: “It was a must-win because we know that we need points to get the position we want to get the top four. We did our job properly and that’s why we got the three points.

“They [Wolves] are a really smart team, they defend really well. They are compact, it’s difficult to go through their lines. They have quality on the ball.

“They have players with pace up front and they are really good technically, so we had to be aware of the counters, we had to be aware when they had the ball, we had to have the right press on them. So, I think we did really well, [it was] a professional performance and that’s why we get the points.”

Fernandes will certainly hope Martial keeps up his scoring habit and the Red Devils continue winning between now and the end of the campaign. They round their Premier League season off against Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham before taking on Man City in the FA Cup final.
