The Real Reason Why Stephen Curry Didn’t Try To Convince Kevin Durant To Stay With The Warriors

In the summer of 2019, Kevin Durant shocked the basketball world by leaving behind his old team, the Golden State Warriors, to seek something new in New York City.

While Durant himself made the decision for his own reasons, many fans felt it was a huge mistake to leave behind such a great situation.

For the Dubs, the loss of Durant effectively ended the peak of their dynasty, and yet Stephen Curry hardly made any pitch at all to Durant when it was time to fight for this future.

All these years later, we finally know why…

“Stephen Curry flew straight to the New York area from Shanghai, China. But he wasn’t going to pitch Kevin Durant on why he should stay with the Warriors. It was already too late. He was on the plane when the news broke that Durant was leaving for Brooklyn,” Marcus Thompson II wrote, via Basketball News. “And Curry didn’t turn the jet around or cancel the trip. Because it wasn’t about recruiting. It was about respect. It was about thanks.”

It’s likely that Durant was going to the Nets regardless of what Curry would have said, but the 2x MVP wasn’t trying to beg him to stay anyway.

For Steph, he just was thankful that KD gave them three years of unparalleled greatness, which effectively put the franchise on the map as a modern-day dynasty.

And while we all know how things turned out in Brooklyn, the Warriors are certainly no better off as they continue to struggle down the stretch of the season.

Could KD One Day Return To Golden State?

In Phoenix now, Durant has been vocal about his appreciation for the franchise, and it’s highly unlikely he’ll leave anytime soon. But with KD, you never really know how he’s feeling, and there’s a realistic chance he will start looking for another team within a few years.

The Warriors, as they stand now, could be a future landing spot for no. 35, and even with the advanced age of both him and Steph, they could re-take the NBA crown together.

While it’s still a long shot for now, you can never say never with the Warriors, who seemingly always find a way to stay relevant.
