The curious detail emerged thanks to the publication of the actor’s personal diaries

Alan Rickman is remembered today as one of the greatest British actors of our time. By playing Professor Severus Snape in the Harry Potter saga , the London-based interpreter has left an immense legacy to his audience; a legacy that, more than six years after his death, can today be explored not only through his films, but also through his personal diaries, published in October 2022 under the title Madly Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman .

His writings cover a period of eleven years, from 2000 to 2011, thus including the entire production of the Harry Potter saga, of which he was the protagonist, with background, personal observations, reflections and curiosities from the set. One of the most interesting passages is the one that reveals the deep and sincere bond that united Rickman and Daniel Radcliffe , interpreter of the young protagonist. In fact, the actor wrote that he admired his colleague’s sensitivity, intelligence and talent, which he has substantially seen grow over the years.

Conversely, Rickman had been very critical of Emma Watson , the face of Hermione Granger, especially because of her unconvincing acting. In a passage from 2003, which can therefore be placed during the filming of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , the actor writes in her diaries that the young woman seemed to have many difficulties on the set: «These guys need to be directed. They don’t know their lines and Emma’s diction sometimes seems that of an Albanian.’

However, Rickman also added that the actress has managed to make great strides over the years, admitting that even he himself has learned a lot alongside her on set. He described the young colleague as an intelligent and talented person, despite the fact that her approach to acting was often frustrating, to the point of even causing him to argue with the director Alfonso Cuarón, who was against her not always very kind remarks.
