Erik Ten Hag explains why Man Utd won’t appeal Casemiro’s red card

Casemiro, a key midfielder for Manchester United, will be absent from their matchup with Leicester City this month after deciding not to contest his red card against Crystal Palace.

Casemiro was dismissed for grabbing Palace’s Will Hughes around the throat during a melee involving several players from both sides. After the match, which United won 2-1, manager Erik ten Hag hinted that the club would appeal in a bid to have the suspension overturned.

However, speaking ahead of his side’s midweek clash with manager-less Leeds United, Ten Hag confirmed there will be no appeal, meaning Casemiro will sit out the next three Premier League games, including the Red Devils’ home clash with the Foxes on February 19.

“Consider, yeah,” said Ten Hag of a possible appeal. “Still it’s for me not the right decision but I don’t think we have a chance in a legal process.

“I always have to play with the players who are available and we have a squad, we have many good players in our squad who are also not playing in the starting XI and I have to do it.”

Ten Hag was unhappy with the red card, adjudged to be for violent conduct after being reviewed by VAR. United felt Palace striker Jordan Ayew should have been punished for his part in an altercation with Fred in the same melee.

Casemiro will complete his ban against the Foxes, making him available for the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United at Wembley at the end of the month. Had United appealed and failed, the Brazilian’s suspension could have been extended to more domestic matches.
